How I Made a $500 Costume for Under $80 (And You Can Too!)

Today we are talking about the holy grail of cosplay. Budget.

I know what you are thinking. “But Sarah! That armor looks like it cost a fortune!” Well, guess what. It didn’t. I spent exactly $76 on this entire build. Yes. Seventy-six dollars. And it took me three weekends of crying and hot glue burns.

Here is the secret. You don’t need expensive foam. You don’t need custom-molded boots. You just need a brain and a trip to the hardware store.

Material Swaps That Actually Work

Props like this can be done with basic materials!

First up. EVA foam is great. But it can be pricey if you buy the wrong thickness. For this build. I used 3mm foam for the small details and 5mm for the big pieces. I bought it at a local craft store on clearance. It was half price because it was slightly warped. I just flattened it under heavy books for a day. Boom. Flat foam.

For the fabric parts. I didn’t buy silk. I bought a polyester blend from the clearance rack at Joann Fabrics. It holds dye well and doesn’t wrinkle as much as cotton. Pro tip. Spray it with starch before ironing. It gives you that crisp. professional look without the professional price tag.

The Wig Hack

Okay. The wig. This is where people overspend.

Do not buy a $40 wig for a character who wears a helmet or has short hair.

  • Buy a $10 wig.
  • Cut it yourself.
  • Use a cheap curling iron.
  • Heat it up.
  • Let it cool.
  • Style it.

It will look just as good as the expensive one. I saved $30 just on hair.

Tools You Actually Need

You do not need a Dremel. You do not need a heat gun. You need:

  • A hot glue gun (the cheap one is fine)
  • Sandpaper (start with 100 grit. end with 400)
  • An X-Acto knife
  • Acrylic paint

That is it. Everything else is just nice to have.

Final Thoughts

Cosplay is about creativity. Not your wallet. If you are broke. Get creative. Thrift stores are your best friend. Look for shapes. Look for colors. Modify. Paint. Glue.

Let me know in the comments what your biggest budget challenge is. Is it the wig? The armor? The shoes? I will make a video next week on cheap shoe hacks. Stay crafty!
